Floating is a Spiritual Experience - Healing the Brain and the Body.

Why Float?

Floatation therapy is based on a scientific approach to deep relaxation called Restricted Environmental Stimulation Technique or more appropriately, R.E.S.T.  Our floatation tanks provide a profound sense of rest and relaxation. Floatation helps eliminate stress and recreate new, positive electrical pathways throughout your body. After a float, you can expect decreased pain, reduced stress, increased concentration, enhanced memory, and better sleep.  Floating resets the mind and body in a subtle way so we begin to function better without even realizing the changes, at first.  We just begin to notice that "things" don't bother us a much and we cope better.  While driving, we wonder why everyone is in such a hurry, rather than before floating, we were wondering why everyone was driving so slowly.  It seems the world has changed but it's really just we have changed and so we see the world and its problems differently.  We see that proverbial glass as half FULL instead of half empty.

If you could add ONE habit to benefit ALL of you - it would be to form a floating habit.  Resolve to float on a regular basis - and notice how living life becomes more about loving life.

Purified Water Every Float

Our tanks have a multi-stage filter that sanitizes the mineral salt solution between sessions. Each soundproof floatation tank is thoroughly cleaned prior to every use and our staff ensures the solution in each pod is maintained at optimum temperature. In addition, you have he ability to completely customize your floatation experience. You can choose to float with the lights on or off. You can float with the tank lid open or closed. You also have the option to float in total silence or with music.

The mineral salts solution in each tank is comprised of 200 gallons of water and 800 pounds of medical-grade Epsom salts, creating an environment similar to the Dead Sea, which enables the individual to float effortlessly on the surface.  The water is heated to skin temperature (93.5 degrees) so once you have settled into the solution it is virtually impossible to distinguish between parts of the body that are in contact with the water and those that are not.  The density of the salt allows you to float on the surface without any strain or effort, free from the harmful forces of gravity.  It almost feels as if you are floating on air.

With the elimination of external stimuli, the central nervous system's workload is reduced by as much as 90 percent, triggering a deep-relaxation response.  The brain enters the theta brainwave state, which is normally difficult to achieve.

What Is Floating?

The practice of floatation (also called floatation therapy) is quickly gaining popularity in the United States as a primary means of rest, relaxation, and recovery. Additionally, it is being used as an alternative to medicated solutions for chronic pain and generating notable results. The weightlessness achieved by effortlessly floating in a dense salt water solution makes it possible for the muscular, skeletal and circulatory systems to rest in a zero gravity environment, a unique sensation that only astronauts and free divers will regularly experience. Interestingly, the life of all animal offspring originates in this weightless environment, which speaks volumes to justifying the reason we find comfort in this state.

There are 300 million Americans suffering from chronic illnesses - mysteries because medicine and science do not know what causes them, therefore cannot cure them.  They can only hope to relieve some suffering by medicating the symptoms.  Unfortunately, the medications cause terrible side effects.  These illnesses always create pain and sleep disorders.  Floating addresses and affects both pain and sleep patterns.  Daily living keeps us in a flight-or-flight mode.  Floating allows a safe place to decompress, turn off the adrenaline and heal.

Floating benefits everyone with unique health problems, or without.  Most people who float will experience a general sense of well being,  clarity of mind, calmness, more energy and optimism, while feeling more positive and happy.  There can be a decrease in cortisol and other stress hormones and of course, the personal favorite of a sleep deprived nation - better and deeper sleep.

Some people come to float in order to be more creative and think more clearly, to eliminate or reduce pain and hopefully heal their brain..  Some just want to unplug for a short period of time and relax.  Whatever your reasons, try floating.  Just do it and then do it again and again.  It's worth it.

TO DO'S and TO DON'Ts as to what to expect to make your first float even better:

  • Don't drink caffeine 6 hours before since coffee is a stimulant and might keep you from relaxing.

  • Do eat a light meal a couple hours before so you don't hear your digestive system working.

A Vacation From Pain:

People in pain, particularly chronic pain, can experience both immediate and long-term relief from floating. For a veteran often dealing with constant chronic pain - both physical and emotional - the effortless floating experience to eliminate gravitational pull and dispersing body weight can be a relief from the signature illnesses of veterans and first responders alike.

Also for an arthritis sufferer, a pregnant woman or anyone else dealing with sore muscles and joints, a float session can be a 60- to 90-minute vacation from pain.  As one veteran said after a float: "I forgot all the @#&* I've been through."  His comment still brings tears.  We are blessed to bring relief.  God Bless our relief.

Executives Floating

Busy schedules, stress, physical activity, and overwhelming external stimulation propagated by technology and media takes a toll on the mental, physical, spiritual, and social/emotional levels of a human, being.  Business people are always looking ahead, towards the next meeting, the next goal, or the next best invention. As a result, the mind never gets a break, sleep is interrupted or put off, while productivity and creativity begins to stall.  Floating for these over worked and stressed out individuals is a must and can accomplish the following:

  • Sense of well being and confidence booster

  • Creativity and problem solving may be enhanced

  • Clarity of mind and sharpened visualization

  • Reduction of stress and anxiety

  • Improved sleep quality along with the ability to sleep

  • Reduction of cortisol and other stress related hormones

Expecting Moms to Float - Often

Both my daughters have had twins.  I can't even imagine what that feels like to have more than one little person growing inside of me.  So, apart from their being able to identify with the surroundings of the babies' world, there are numerous benefits to floating while pregnant.

  • For 60 to 90 minutes, you won't be fighting gravity — The 900 pounds of epsom salt in the water makes you feel totally weightless, a real treat I'm told when the moms are typically feeling a bit like a hippopotamus.

  • For Stress Relief — Growing a human is hard work. It’s exhausting, stressful, and mentally strenuous. Floating gives the mom the opportunity to unplug and destress thanks to the lack of distraction. How nice to NOT be distracted for a time.

  • Floating naturally increases dopamine and endorphin levels, boosting mood levels and leaving Mom with a pleasant “afterglow” feeling and look that lasts for days.

  • Rest for Body and Baby — In addition to the mental benefits, floating can help reduce swelling, ease aches and pains, and bring a state of relaxation for Mom that creates an ultra-soothing atmosphere for Baby or Babies at the same time. This is especially appealing to women who prefer to avoid taking pain medication for muscle aches, back pain, etc.   God Bless All the Moms.

  • And Dads, you need to float too - your world is obviously changing.

Floating for P.T.S.D.

War is always tough on our men and women in uniform as well as their families and friends.  Viet Nam era as well as this last decade has created lasting psychological effects of traumatic experiences in combat zones and when they return home, what used to be normal daily life is now a painful daily struggle. Especially with 20 to 40 daily suicides plaguing our nation's families and the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PSTD) placing Americans in pain.  PTSD is a life altering mental condition triggered by a traumatic event or series of traumatic events in someone’s life. Although scientific studies on the effects floatation therapy has on PTSD are minimal, early research shows there is a correlation between regular floating and a reduction in the symptoms of PTSD and anxiety in general. Regular floatation therapy has been proven to reduce symptoms and result in the following:

  • Increased sense of well being, calm, focus, energy, and optimism

  • Mental clarity and improved visualization

  • Significant reduction in stress and anxiety

  • Decrease in heart rate and blood pressure

  • Decrease in cortisol and other stress hormones

  • Improved sleep quality (my personal favorite)

Anyone struggling with these symptoms is strongly encouraged to embrace floating as a non-medicated supplement to current therapies. All lives are important and you deserve to heal.  Since PTSD is one of the standard illnesses of Veteran Wellness Center of Hampton Roads, we are very aware of the following symptoms listed by the Mayo Clinic as common symptoms of PTSD that may include:

  • Negative feelings about yourself or other people

  • Inability to experience positive emotions

  • Feeling emotionally numb

  • Lack of interest in activities you once enjoyed

  • Hopelessness about the future

  • Memory problems, including not remembering important aspects of the traumatic event

  • Difficulty maintaining close relationships

  • Irritability, angry outbursts or aggressive behavior

  • Always being on guard for danger

  • Overwhelming guilt or shame

  • Self-destructive behavior, such as drinking too much or driving too fast

  • Trouble concentrating

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Being easily startled or frightened
